AI Season 13 Top 4 Elimination 05-08-14

Okay, I didn't get home until late last night, after watching the last music concert of this school year.
I admit to knowing who was eliminated, but I don't know anything else about the show. So I'm live blogging from the DVR, and pretending that I don't know how it ends...

So, we begin in black and white memories of previous home-town visits, something the Top 3 only get to experience. David Cook, David Archuletta, Phil Phillips, Candace Glover, Bo Bice, Hailey Reinhart, Carrie Underwood, Jessica Sanchez... In color, Ryan is still scruffy, this time in a blue suit.

JLo is wearing a tight, short red halter dress with a whole chunk cut out of the hem. Her hair is soft and down, with a side part. Her makeup looks very nice tonight. Keith's teeth are very white.

The last supper recap subjects: special effects, Keith love, JLo showing everyone how to walk in heels, Keith falling down, JLo smoochies, oh yeah, and someone going home. Sad faces.

Jena is in pink pants with a black gingham tie-front blouse. Caleb has a black leather jacket. Jessica is in black and pants with holey knees. Alex's shirt fades from one color to the next.

Fordmercial- low-rent as usual. Kids talking about what they miss, and looking at guitars and letting the cars park themselves. Also vinyl records and hot dogs. Boooring.

HCJ is throwing beignets to the audience? Powdered sugar everywhere. Good Lord. The man is out of control. JLo can eat a beignet without getting sugar on her lipstick. The woman is magic. Red dress, weird hem, pretty hair magic.

Dim the lights... here we go... first Top Three Finalist is..... Jena (confession: my brain still says Jenna every time I see her name). Jena is very happy in her pink pants and very tall shoes, which she still has not learned to walk in.

What? More filler? On this show? Color me surprised. So the kids have pizza in the park and scripted comments. Jessica, 3 months is not almost half a year... Otherwise, I believe I will fast forward through this bit. Foreshadowing on who is going home... lots of foreshadowing...

Next safe? Caleb, who I hope will be instantly enrolled in a Media Savvy Course on How Not To Insult Your Fans and/or A Whole Lot of Other Folks during Radio Interviews.

So, the show has been renewed? I think I'm done with it. Seriously.

Alex and Jessica are in the bottom, and Jessica looks like she's going to get sick. Or maybe she's a little relieved when Alex is named as the final finalist.

I like Jessica's voice, and she has been a class act throughout. I hope she finds her way. Oops, she's not as relieved as I thought she might be. Her tears are making me a little misty. Dammit, I wish she could have tapped into that vein of deep emotion all along, because there is real feeling in her final performance.

Ha ha Stage Mom who predicted that Jessica would never make it on the show- 4th Place is an honorable finish, and there is a fairly long list of non-winners who have viable careers in music, so it's not over for her.

A Serious Post and an Apology

Back in the late 90's, I occasionally amused myself by scanning pattern catalog drawings and changing them into paper dolls. I shared those dolls with friends in a paper doll group. Then around 2007, I posted several of those sets here at Dakota Dreams, including some sets made from Simplicity's Daisy Kingdom fabric and pattern designs. I did not ask for permission to use these drawings in any way, much less to alter them, or to publish them on my blog.

Yesterday, Maggie Raguse, the artist who drew those many outfits, contacted me and asked that I remove those files from my blog. I have done so, and I am so very sorry that in posting the dolls, anyone, anywhere may have thought that I was declaring myself the originator of those adorable drawings.

I am so sorry, Ms. Raguse. It was an incredible lapse in common sense, especially given that I stress copyright infringement in all of my talks on knitwear design.

I apologize to my readers as well.

If you have linked to, or reposted, any of those scans anywhere, or pinned them on Pinterest, please honor Ms. Raguse's entirely reasonable request to remove those files.

Thank you, and again, I'm sorry.

AI Season 13 Top 4 Performance 05-07-14

 Here we go again.

So, what sort of ridiculous thing will they throw at us this week in a misguided attempt to generate drama and ratings?

It just occurred to me that those vote cards were artfully arranged so that the two no votes were read last, so was even more contrived than it seemed.

Whoa, Ryan has stubble! I would maybe have bet against him being able to grow facial hair. He also is not wearing a tie, and his shirt looks sloppily buttoned. It's a harbinger of the impending apocalypse.

JLo is all in pink Barbie clothes tonight, with her hair up in a messy bun, and her shoes tied with ankle bows. The guys look like themselves. The kids are singing three songs apiece, all about love, or something like that.

Caleb rehashes an old failed romance. His breakup song is You Give Love a Bad Name. He's wearing a tan denim jacket over a white tee with a faded skull print. As usual, Caleb is singing Calebly, but he sings right to Keith, which is amusing. I love seeing Allison Iraheta with the backup singers. Caleb has iron pipes, I'll give him that.

Keith says it was a great way to kick off the show. JLo agrees with Keith. HCJ thinks it was great, and suggests finding more signature ad-libs.

On a show with a history of stupid ideas, asking audience members to stand next to the TV and take a selfie of themselves with the idol kids ranks right up there. Or right down there. It's stupid, is what I'm trying to say.

Jessica is singing Since U Been Gone. She's happy to get rid of bad boyfriends. Her hair streaks are back to fuchsia. Her short skirt is bedazzled, and she's wearing a black blouse. Man, I think she's off totally, but her eyes aren't quite blank. The judges are hard on her when she's good, and this isn't. They're going to put her through the mangler.

JLo starts out asking Jessica how she feels, which is not a good sign. She says the attitude was there but it was the wrong song choice. HCJ is glad Jessica has two more songs and he tries to tell Jessica how to connect, but I think it's too late for that. Keith moved around during the performance to help Jessica connect. Again- too little, too late.

Jessica takes criticism better than anyone in the history of this show. It has to be very hard to hear so very little encouragement from the judges week after week.

Alex had a heartbreak. Imagine that. He's singing Too Close, just him and an acoustic guitar. His white tee has a faded rose on it. He might actually be wearing socks. Hey! I know this song! Alex is doing very very well with this. You never ever hear Alex off-key or off beat (except when he wants to be off-beat).  This was great!

HCJ explains why the audience loves Alex- that he's a real artist. Keith wants Alex to artfully mangle the song a bit more. JLo uses a lot of syllables to say that Alex is too consistently good and she's afraid voters will take it for granted.

Jena is wearing pewter high water pants and a red leather blouse with a white leather Peter Pan collar (well, it's not rounded, so a pointy Peter Pan collar). It's a pretty cute outfit. She got her heart broken at age 14, as we all do at age 14. Ooh, Jena should kill Heartbreaker. And damn, she's doing it. This kid is good. And that note at the end!!!!!!!

Keith thought Jena held back just a bit. JLo agrees with the wildly approving audience. HCJ says the vocal was 10 out of 10, and he agrees with Keith. Jena says she was worried about falling off her shoes- they all say to take the shoes off. And then JLo demos how it's done WITH shoes on...

Caleb is dedicating Traveling Band to his homeboys. This time, he's wearing a black on black shirt and a black leather jacket. And he can sing CCR too. I am not exactly surprised. So, will people pay to listen to Caleb shout for 90 minutes? I'm not sure they will. He's good, really good, but it's all the same. Every single time.

JLo isn't tired of the same old same old. HCJ compliments the house band. Keith refers to Randy, who shouts from the distance without a microphone.

Jessica has a bedazzled jacket this time, and an odd tiered black shirt over print pants and knee-length boots. She's singing something by Pink as a major FU to everyone who didn't like her. This time she's finally showing life and attitude. This may be Jessica's best performance. She's rockin' it.

HCJ still didn't love it. Keith either. Man, what in the world do they want from her? JLo too? You know, I generally discount conspiracy theories, but I'm starting to believe that the judges really do have it in for Jessica.

Jena is in black and white hounds tooth and a red/pink satin jacket with a black sequin applique. She's dedicating Bad Romance to her fans, which seems odd to me, but then again, I don't know the lyrics, so maybe it makes perfect sense. I think she's doing fine, but the judges are sitting fairly still, so maybe not.

Keith looks for something good to say, but he has to dig pretty deeply. JLo didn't even smile during the performance, and wasn't happy with the changes. HCJ asked specific questions about the changes and Jena's answer made sense (the original didn't sound good).

Commercial note: I loved The Fault in our Stars, but under no circumstances am I going to see the movie. I do not have enough strength for that.

Alex, in a black and white striped shirt and blue and gray wind breaker, is singing I'm Yours for his girlfriend, who is in the audience. He's playing a teeny little guitar, but I don't think it's a ukulele. Or maybe it's a biggish uke. Anyway, he's doing an excellent job with this song. You know, it just occurred to me that Alex could win this whole thing- Caleb and Jena might cancel each other out.

JLo loves Alex and the audience loves Alex, but she still wants a surprise. HCJ gets all technical about musicality. Keith babbles.

Caleb's first kiss was interrupted by the girl's father. He's singing Maybe I'm Amazed, and I suspect this one will be different from his other two performances tonight (or any of his performances ever). He's wearing his gray Civil War jacket over a black shirt with white streaks. And he's actually doing okay with this- some shouty but it's the right amount of shoutiness. Sir Paul shouts it too.

Keith and JLo stand. Lordy, for a minute I thought Carole Bayer Sager was Joan Collins. HCJ says the song was phenomenal. Keith agrees completely. JLo thinks it was Caleb's best performance. I can't disagree with any of them.

Jessica's first love was at age 8. They chased each other and held hands and ate food. It was perfect. She's singing Lady Gaga's You and I for a specific unnamed person. She's wearing a black halter top with a white satin shawl collar. And I think Jessica is doing fine with this, and she's showing a lot more emotion than usual. I hope whoever she's singing for is smiling.

Keith thought it was the perfect song! JLo agrees! HCJ praises and praises! Will wonders never cease?

They better hurry it up- two more songs to go.

Jena and her BFF used to sneak out at age 13 to visit a pair of brothers. She's singing I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. Jena, in pink, black and white, sits at the piano and sings beautifully and quietly. Her changes are lovely. JLo has Goosies on top of Goosies.

Keith and JLo stand again. Oh, Jena is wearing shorts. Baggy ugly shorts. Boxer shorts shorts. JLo is incoherent and amazed and moved. HCJ is nearly speechless too. Keith says Jena is a musical platypus. And it is likely that the weird glitch in the middle of the song was caused by JLo saying a very very naughty word... an amazed word and an appreciative one, but one that is forbidden by the FCC nonetheless.

So far, the #3 songs have been absolutely great. I hope Alex continues the streak.

Alex fell in love at age 5. He's singing Yellow, by Coldplay. Or maybe Hello. I don't know the title. Maybe I know the song- sometimes that happens. We'll see. He's wearing a blue jacket over a tee shirt. He's hitting some lovely falsetto notes. And doing a little yodeling. Nope, I don't know this song, so I have no idea if he's changing it up or not, but the audience seems to be enjoying it. There's a break in his voice that I like a lot.

HCJ loves it. Keith thought the song fit Alex's poetic vulnerability perfectly. JLo thought it was great.

So of the first two sets of songs, Alex #1, Jena #1, Jessica #2 were great. And all four did a marvelous job with their #3 performances, with Jena's possibly being the best. I have no idea who is going home tomorrow, but given the last month or so, it'll probably be Jessica.

So, I have a school music concert tomorrow night. I'll record the episode and recap it when I get home.

Road Knitting

I'm finally rebooting after the long string of trips and festivals (I've been on the road a lot since last June). I'm home now until mid-August, when I teach again at the Michigan Fiber Festival. That doesn't mean I won't hit the road anyway, but if I do, it'll be a fun trip, not work (equally tiring, and far more expensive... ho ho).

Anyway, the Black Hills Fiber Arts Fair was wonderful- an inaugural event with no glitches in any of my classes (except one where I forgot how many folks I had listed as the maximum and did not prepare for the full number. But a lovely lady with a copy machine saved the day, and all was well). I'll go back happily.

On the way, I did some road knitting, worsted weight leftover-yarn socks.
I had already finished the first sock, and was working on the mate when I realized that the first one had a light gray band on the foot that the mate did not (a Noro-like yarn, with surprise color bands). I know that leftover socks cannot match stripes perfectly, and yet I like them to match mostly. What to do?

I know....

And so the feet of the finished socks match as well as possible (Sharpie is Forever). The Christmas stockings were projects in my Fair Isle Nordic Stocking class (which teaches Fair Isle AND afterthought heels). The little hat was my class sample in the Toddler Fair Isle Hat class. All classes went very very well, and I had a smashing time with genius students!

I did not come home empty handed-  I intend to make a sparkly shawl (probably Hitchhiker) for my sister with the Moonlight Sonata.
And grandgirl socks with the Fluormania, which I love love love!

I also met Maria of M1 Designs and bought this pattern, which I hope to knit fairly soon, except that I am working on a Super Secret Something Which Cannot Be Announced Until I Know For Sure That There Is Actually Something To Announce. Stay tuned!

AI Season 13- Top 5 Elimination 05-01-14

Here we go again!

Ryan promises a shocking twist. This show has an odd notion of shocking, but Ryan says it's a *game changer*. We'll see.

JLo is wearing a short white hippie dress, with bell sleeves and a lace-up front opening. Her hair is weirdly smooth tonight, almost like she's bald on top, and her eye shadow is very dark. HCJ is wearing a suit with a mis-matched shirt and tie.

Post show convos include Jena's mom, and Sam's blushiness, and sadness over eliminations.

Ryan keeps hinting that something terrible is about to happen- I wonder if they're going to do some version of The Huff. Whatever it is, I suspect it'll be nasty, because this show loves nothing more than torturing the hand that feeds it.

Really, Fruit of the Loom? Really? Really?

The Fordmercials this year are low-tech, low-rent, and really boring- the kids driving around in Fords and pretending to play and have fun. Wherefore art the costumes and makeup and bad scripting of yore?

Keith is singing Good Thing from his new album. He really is rather adorable. This song is sort of hard-rockin' country. I'm sure it'll do well among fans of Keith Urban's music. I just like to watch him enjoying the kids sing.

There's barely 10 minutes left in the episode and still we waste time with Randy Jackson. No wonder the franchise is circling the drain.

So they're lined up. Everyone in black and white, except Alex, who is in black and blue. The shocking twist is that the kids can unanimously vote to send the lowest vote getter home as usual, or they can decide that none go home this week and two go next week. I can't think of any reason for them to send anyone home- it hurts none of them, and they can all stay together one more week.

Okay, I can think of one reason- someone might think that Sam will have a better set of performances next week, since I fully expect him to have the lowest totals this week.

Are they friends or are they competitors?

There's no time for a bottom two. The votes are Yes and No, but I am not totally clear on which vote means which decision. But it doesn't matter because the votes weren't unanimous. I'm not sure the kids knew which was which either.

In any case, Sam is leaving, which is exactly right. I like him personally and his voice is generally pleasing, but he needs at least five more years before he's even remotely interesting.

So, who voted to send him home? Any guesses?

Thursday Tab- Kit and Kapoodle, Dress Up Animal Dolls

I don't know anything about this set except that I love it!
