This simple hat pattern knits up quickly on 10.5 needles and bulky yarn. I used some of the old wool/alpaca Knit Picks Sierra that I had on hand. The buttons are my own hand-made lampwork.
The Sierra line has been renamed Cadena, but it's the same yarn. Unfortunately, the color I used (Lettuce) has been discontinued, but there are other great colors that would work. I think maybe Noro Iro might be the same size as well.

I love your buttons!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I went through an obsession with lampworking a year ago or so. I haven't touched the torch in quite awhile, but I have lots of glass buttons and beads that I can use on my knitting now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great hat!! The buttons are to die for, too. I've done a little bit of lampworking but I just can't visualize how you do buttons. They're wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the pattern!
What a lovely hat! So feminine. I am knitting hats for an American Cancer Society fund-raiser (Relay for Life). I wonder if you would mind if we made some hats from your pattern to sell at holiday craft fairs? The buttons wouldn't be as nice, but I still think it would be a great seller.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Amy
Amy, you've reminded me that I need to post my guidelines on using my patterns on the right side of the main page.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, you may make and give away or sell as many items from my patterns as you like. I only ask that the actual pattern pages not be reposted (though linking to them is fine).
I'm pleased that you like the pattern.
Kat, I use a button mandrel- which is a mandrel with 2 prongs. You build the glass up around the pair of prongs for the button. It's difficult for me (I'm self-taught), so I didn't make a lot of buttons (and a fair portion of them broke before annealing). But the ones that did survive turned out pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to the mandrels, you'll have to scroll about halfway down the page for a pic.

What a great hat! I was delighted to see that it was designed by a mystery author I read for years. I've still got one of your bookmark magnets posted on my refrigerator. Thanks for sharing more of your creativity.
ReplyDeleteMolly
Great hat! Knitting it with thinner yarn makes it fitting for a child. Love the buttons.
ReplyDeleteMolly- did you get the magnet from a Bouchercon? Or maybe Mayhem in the Midlands? I haven't been to a mystery convention for quite awhile- they were such fun.

I felt bad about not having time to size the hat pattern down for kids- but you're right. Knitting it with worsted weight yarn and size 8 or 9 needles would make it about the right size for a child. Great idea!
Good post.
ReplyDeleteDo you sell your hand-made buttons? I absolutely love them, and its hard to find a good button.
ReplyDeleteKathleen, I just love your patterns and your books and your blog! So glad to have found this. Keep it up! We love you!
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern for the Button Band Hat, can't wait to start it and show it off at my guild meeting! Thank you again!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern ... a darling hat. I am getting back into knitting again and this will be a fun first project .... your buttons are fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I just shared this with a group of wonderful women that make hats for a cancer clinic. We were looking for a summer weight hat and this is perfect.
