I have 1 1/2 adult size sweaters, 3 pairs of mittens, a scarf (or 5), and a couple of pairs of socks to finish before Christmas. So what did I do last night? I cast on the December Lights Tam from the Holiday Gifts 2007 issue of Interweave Knits. Do I wear tams? Absolutely not. Do I even have anyone to give the tam to? Not really, though I'm sure I can find someone who will take it. Do I have time for frivolous knitting projects? Not on your life. So why did I cast on? Beats the hell out of me.
The first pic is what the Tam looks like in the magazine- a lovely pattern using about 8 different yarns. I probably have all of those colors (in some brand or other), but I decided to make it even more simple, by using just 2 colors: Knit Picks Essential Black (is it called coal?) and leftover Trekking self-patterning sock yarn in peach/green/orange/yellow. I'm on a mission to use up stash yarn this year, and this project is perfect for leftover sock yarn because if I run out, I can just use any other color (I have lots of odds and ends). I'm using black for the *reds*, though I might switch on the decrease motifs. And this tam will be machine washable, though I don't think I know anyone who has gotten a tam dirty.
In the end, I think it'll look more like October Lights, but it should be pretty.

How totally lovely! I love autumn colors, just check out my wardrobe. I wear hats because I like to be outside in the winter. I just finished my first two color stranded project and I need to add the tassle but that will after church today. I will post pictures on my blog and over on stranded at Ravelry.
I love this and what a great way to use up those leftovers! A definite "must do" after I finish my long list of other "must do' projects! Enjoying your blog and will link you on my blog list! many thanks!
I'm loving how the hat is coming out too- I think there will be enough yarn to finish it with the Tekking.
You are doing beautiful work. I not only have huge head, but I have in fact gotten tams dirty, by wearing them to work in the barn.
I made one gorgeous tam this fall in blue, turquoise and purple fair isle - I think you have inspired me further.
Oh my! You sound just like me about knitting it - just because you want to. LOL
My hair is too thick to wear hats, tams, beanies, etc. They always slide up.
