Edited 12-14: It appears that computers outside the USA have trouble downloading this booklet. This booklet is in the public domain in the US, but perhaps not in other countries.
Edited 12/13 to Add: some people are having some trouble downloading this booklet, and one poster said it had been removed from the Google Books site. But I just went and downloaded it again, so it's still there (or it has been put back, which is more likely). If it's still available when you try again, click on the PDF download link below, then on the upper right portion of the page that opens is another PDF link. Click that and it should open in your Adobe reader. Save it from there.
The Socknitters Yahoogroup put me on to this amazing 1915 downloadable sock knitting book, written by Maud Churchill Nicoll. It's available through Google Books as a PDF download. I haven't had a chance to read it all, but the booklet is 101 pages, and it features many toe and heel treatments.
Enjoy!
p.s. click on the link, click on PDF, and then save
Thank you so much for linking to this, what a treasure!
ReplyDeleteThank You so very much!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a must-see but, I am unable to find where the PDF download is via the instructions you have given. Can you be more specific? Thank-you.
ReplyDeleteKellie
Guess I was too late. It looks like this book is still under copyright, and someone has complained to Google--the download is no longer available.
ReplyDeleteKellie- check the blog post for more specific directions.
ReplyDeletedawn: I just tried again and it was there. Maybe they put it back up.
Cool! thanks for turning us on to this!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, again, Kathleen:
ReplyDeleteWell, I went to the page again (following your link) and it is the same for me as it was the last time. There's no download link on the page. There's a link to information about "where's the rest of this book" which talks about copyright.
I'm stumped as to why I'm seeing what is apparently a different page. Did you refresh the page when you visited the site a second time? It sounds like Kellie is getting to the same page that I'm seeing. Weird! I'll see if I can find the contact info for Google Books and ask them about it.
dawn- this is so strange. Just now, I followed that link again, on 2 different computers (from my blog page), and got to the download page again on both of them. I don't see anything about copyright at all. Very mysterious.
ReplyDeleteI was able to open and then save the pdf of this book just now. Fascinating! Thank you so much for the link.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the link! Looking forward to reading it~~Diane, California
ReplyDeleteaccording to posts on the Socknitters yahoogroup, people outside of the USA are having trouble downloading this booklet. I think perhaps other countries' copyright laws differ from ours, and it may not be available anywhere else. I do believe that the booklet has been posted in the files section at Socknitters, so those who can't get it from the website, may be able to join and download it from there.
ReplyDeleteI began to suspect that Canadians couldn't download from the site...thanks for confirming that. Gee, I'm going to look like a goof for posting that suggestion on Socknitters a minute ago, without checking the message history.
ReplyDeleteThe book probably is in the public domain in Canada, too. We were not able to buy the Amazon Kindle here until a month or so ago. I believe that was due to regulations regarding electronic transfer of books, rather than public domain concerns. I haven't heard anything back from Google about why we don't have access, though.
Dang it, I can't download it :(
