Alert Knitter Debbie pointed out that the pictured hat did not match the chart on the pattern page, and that the gauge would be wrong for the listed length. She is absolutely correct, so here is a revised chart, with 64 rows.
I am very sorry for the error.
This hat was inspried by the snowflake mittens in the book Small Sweaters, by Lise Kolstead and Tone Takle). I knitted it with handspun yarn, but you can substitute heavier fingering weight or lighter sport weight commercial yarns (whatever will give you the right gauge). The hat should fit most ladies (depending on the elasticity of your yarn), but you can make it wider by adding another stitch or two to the vertical borders (there are 6 repeats, 2 more sts per vertical border will add just under an inch to the circumference). If you want the hat longer, you can work more rounds of the lower border before beginning the snowflake.

You're so generous to share your wonderful patterns! I'll have to look for the prefect yarn for this hat--it's beautiful!!
It is just beautiful - this will be my next colorwork hat!!
Thank you kat and pat- it was a fun hat to knit. I hope you enjoy it too!
Hello. I came to visit via the "Wool for Brains" blog. I saw the beautiful hat pattern and knew that I wanted to put that on my list of things to knit. It is very generous of you to post the pattern. Thank you.
Thanks for the pattern!
Is it because I have a Mac? I can't right click and download the pdf.
katie- the pattern pages aren't in pdf format. They're jpgs (which I think Macs can handle too). When you click on the image to enlarge, then you should be able to save it as a graphics file (in whatever format Macs like best) to print out later. I hope that works. If not, let me know and I'll just e-mail the files to you.
Thank you very much for this lovely pattern! It looks just as norwegian as me!! I would like to knit this hat for easter!!!
this hat is gorgeous. I can't wait until I can try this pattern. I'm not at that level yet, but this hat sure makes me want to learn. Beautiful. Thanks!

Out of all the "men's hats" on Ravelry, my man fell in love with this one. He is picky about his hats! As with Katie K, I can't right click on my Mac and would love to save this on my iPhone for off-site knitting. Are you willing to email a copy of the jpeg? Thank you.
Sure Kari- shoot me your e-mail to email@example.com and I'll send it to you
I made this hat a few years ago, and I LOVE IT. It is my go-to winter hat and I get complements on it wherever I go. Thank you so much for the great pattern.
This pattern is absolutely gorgeous, thank you so much for posting it. Quickly becoming one of my favorite things I've knitted. I was making one for my dad for Christmas, and my husband loved it so much he asked for one as well! Fun to knit, and looks amazing. Will definitely be checking out more of your patterns!
Hello! I absolutely fell in love with the hat...but I have never knitted with charts and am not brave enough to try this one when it comes to the decrease rounds. Do you have written instructions for just that part anywhere? On Ravelry perhaps? I could even imagine a blanket in Christmas colours for a baby with the design!
Janaki's Blah-g: Sorry, no written instructions. Maybe you can give the chart a try, it's actually a lot easier to read chart instructions than written ones (for me anyway). Good luck!
No idea if you still see new comments but wanted to say - this excellent hat pattern is still being used - many thanks for it!
