Links to the Freebies

Though I labeled the posts when I wrote them, I obviously didn't label them well enough, because I regularly get requests for directions to one or another of the Freebie Patterns that are posted here on the blog. So, this morning, I went through the entire archives, re-labeling and getting the links to all of them (or all of them that I saw, I'm sort of bleary-eyed now, so I may have missed one or two). Now every one of the Freebie and Freebie Friday Patterns, and the Tutorials has every variation of *free*, *freebie*, and *free pattern* that I could think of in their tags. That should make searching for them easier. Also, almost all of these patterns are listed in Ravelry, with a direct link, so looking for them from there will likely be easier.

These are the Guidelines on using the Free Patterns that I posted back in '07- the Guidelines still stand:

About using the free patterns

Here are my thoughts on using the free patterns that I post here (on Fridays, when I can). This applies to these patterns only, not the projects in my books and patterns published by third parties, because the individual publishers have policies on these issues, which override my opinions.

You may
  • Knit 1- 1,000 of each pattern posted
  • Sell the finished items
  • Post pics of the finished items on your blogs, in newsgroups or wherever
  • Tell anyone and everyone where you got the pattern, and direct them here to get their own copy
Please do not
  • Repost the instructions or charts (linking to here is a better option)
  • Print copies of the patterns to hand out (again, link here and let others download their own copies)
  • Teach the patterns as a class without asking first
I would love it if you would:
  • Give attribution where appropriate
  • Let me know if you find mistakes
  • Send me pics or links of the items you knit from the patterns so I can post them here
Thanks!

Freebie Friday- V-Neck Cardigan and Fingerless Mittens for an 18" Doll

It's been awhile since I posted a Freebie Friday pattern, so it's fun to have one I can share with you all again. The body of this simple v-neck cardigan is knit in a single piece with fingering weight sock yarn and size 3 (3.25mm) needles, with the sleeves picked up and knit in place (though you could cast them on and sew them in afterward, if you want). The matching fingerless mittens complete the set.

My finished sweater weighed (buttons and all) 51 gr, so you may be able to knit the entire sweater with 50gr of sock yarn. But if you want the fingerless mittens, you might want to do the ribbings in a contrasting color if you are using new yarns and don't want to dip into a second 50gr ball for a few yards of yarn. This pattern is ideal for leftovers- make it in stripes, or knit all of the sections in entirely different yarns for a glorious mis-match.

Here's the drill, for those who are new to the Freebies: you may knit as many of these as you like, you can sell them... I don't care. Please don't repost the pattern though- if others want it, direct them here for downloading. If you post pics of the sweater, please post a link to here too. And if you want, send pics to me and I'll post them too. Click on the page images (2 for this pattern) to enlarge, save as jpgs, and then print from any graphics program.

Enjoy!

Freebie Friday- American Girl Raglan Cardigan Pattern

Joan I. Wilson most generously gave me permission to upload several of her original American Girl (18") knitting patterns. This first one is a Raglan Cardigan. I haven't knit it myself (I've been too busy at the sewing machine lately, to do much knitting), but the pictures are adorable.

Joan also wanted me to pass this message along: I have a project I work on during the year. You might like to get involved. There is a nationwide organized, Childhelp, that takes in and houses abused children. My friend, Nancy Miller (Nancy@Let'sPlayDolls.com) was abused as a child, and decided that each girl at the Beaumont, California home would receive an American Girl Doll (Just Like You). Online doll collectors spread the word and she raised enough money the first year to buy over 35 AGs. I decided that the girls needed clothes for their dolls, so every Christmas I ask for donations of doll clothes. Two years ago I made 43 doll quilts using pre-printed pillow panels. This year, the members of The Fairy Godmothers made almost 60 outfits, some with shoes and purses. (I have a quick purse pattern, too.)
If you want to participate (I know I'm going to), you can also contact Joan: Joaniwilson2@aol.com
Thank you Joan, for the wonderful pattern!
It's been awhile since we had a Freebie, here's a reminder of the drill: right click on the pattern pages to enlarge, save as jpgs. Print from any graphics program.
Please note: the rights to this pattern belong to Joan. Please contact her for information about licensing or sales.

Freebie Friday- 4 Simple Hats for 18" Dolls

Finally- a Freebie Friday pattern. Of course, it'll only be interesting to those who want to knit doll hats, but I hope a few of you out there will want to try them.

These 4 hats are all variations of the same theme, and all can be knit with under an ounce of leftover heavy sock weight, or light fingering weight yarn, and size 3 needles (dpns, and also straights for the ear flap hat).

Revision- November 28 Scarf

A very kind reader pointed out that there is an error in the November 28 Scarf Freebie Friday pattern. All even rows are PURLED, not knit. I've revised the pattern page. Please download the corrected page for your records (the chart on page 2 is correct, the error was in the written instructions).

So sorry for the error.

Freebie Friday- Fingering Weight Gloves

Wahoo! It's Freebie Friday!!!!

These are the gloves I knit with yarn handspun from Twisted Fiber Arts Firefly Roving. They took under 200 yds of heavy fingering weight handspun, but the pattern will work with any yarn that will give you 7 sts and 10 rnds to the inch with size 3 needles (or whatever needle size you need for that gauge).

These gloves will fit most Women- you could size them down for a youth or child by using finer yarn and smaller needles, I think (and knitting shorter fingers). Sizing them up for men with sportweight or DK yarn and Size 4 needles might also work.

Freebie Friday- Mitered Square Socks

Note: I finished the mate to this pair tonight, and did not have a lot of yarn left from the 120 gr skein of yarn after knitting the Women's Size 7-8. If you plan to knit the larger shoe sizes, it might be a good idea to have some contrasting ribbing/toe/heel yarn on hand, just in case.

This is putting the cart a bit before the horse, seeing as how I don't have the mate finished, but I promised a Freebie Friday pattern this week, and a Freebie Friday you shall have.

I love how this sock (singular) came out- I love how the colors march through the cuff and instep. I love how few ends there were to weave in by using a single self-striping yarn. I love the ease (though not the speed) of the construction.

This sock is knitted flat, and then seamed on the side, so you need straight needles (you can use dpns for the squares, but you'll want longer needles for the toe and ribbing).

I used Twisted Fiber Arts Playful yarn (superwash merino), in the Guardian Colorway, but Twisted yarns are devilishly hard to come by. Any heavy fingering weight yarn will do. You can also make patchwork socks and use up bits and pieces of leftover yarns.

This sock is sized for a medium width foot, with a 30 st sole and heel. If you want a wider sock, pick up 32 sts on the sole and work a 32 st short-row heel (no instructions for that in this pattern, sorry), and then dec 2 sts when you pick up for the toe. If you want a narrower sock, pick up 28 sts on the sole, and work a 28 st short-row heel (no instructions for that in this pattern either) and inc 2 sts before beginning the toe decreases. If you want to make longer socks, just work more stockinette stitch before decreasing for the toe. If you want to make shorter socks, work 3 rows of squares on the instep, and then knit stockinette to the proper length before the toe. If you want a larger sock all around, work 21 st mitered squares (as I did for my earlier Patchwork socks- those socks came out wide and long for me).

For instructions on making the mitered squares refer to this post: http://kathleen-dakotadreams.blogspot.com/2008/09/basic-mitered-squares-instructions.html

Basic Mitered Squares- Instructions

The rest of the sock pattern is here: Mitered Square Socks

I'm going to post the pattern for the Guardian Mitered Square Sock as a Freebie Friday pattern this week! (wahoo!!!). But I thought I'd post the instructions for knitting the Mitered Squares today, so you can get a head start on knitting them, if you want (and to cut the clutter in Friday's downloads).

Mitered Squares can be worked with any size needles and any size yarn, and any ODD number of stitches. I'm posting the square that works for the Guardian Mitered Square Sock (Women's Average Size). You may want to increase or decrease the number of sts, or change yarns or needle sizes. I used Twisted Fiber Arts Playful yarn (heavy fingering weight) and Size 2 (2.75mm) needles. My Mitered Squares are 1 1/4" on all sides. You can adjust the number of squares, or their size as desired.

These instructions are set up for using one self-striping yarn throughout. If you want to use a different yarn for each square (to use up leftovers, for example), the process is the same, except that you cut the yarn after each square and pull the tail through the loop and tighten. Pick Up 1 additional stitch to compensate for the loss of that loop- just make sure you have 19 sts total before beginning the Miter. You'll have to weave in a lot of ends if you use lots of yarns, but the effect is gorgeous (see my earlier Patchwork Socks).

The Guardian Mitered Square sock cuff pattern calls for 4 rows of 6 squares, the Guardian Mitered Square sock instep pattern calls for 4 rows of 3 squares.

I'll post the ribbing, heel, sole, toe and assembly instructions on Friday.

Freebie Friday- A Beaded Floozy Hat

Finally! A Freebie Friday pattern. I probably won't ever get back to having a pattern ready every week, but I will post them as I have them ready, and always on Fridays.

This hat, as mentioned in the post earlier this week, was knit with yarn from Twisted Fiberart's Big Yarn Club. The yarn itself is exclusive to the club (which is closed now), and is not available anywhere- Meg dyed it in a style called Evolutions, in which the color changes gradually throughout the skein. The yarn is called Buxom, it's 100% Organic Merino (amazingly, wonderfully soft), and a Bulky weight. The colorway is Floozy, with rose, brown, green, and blue. The ball was 90 yards, and this hat used all but 5' of the yarn.

This hat, with the simple lace pattern, knit on size 10.5 needles, fits me with the cuff rolled as shown. But it fits my 7 year old granddaughter with the cuff rolled up more. It's pretty much one-size-fits-all.

I used my own handmade lampwork beads, but any commercial beads (glass or otherwise) that are about the size of Pony Beads, will work for this hat. Or you can omit the beads altogether.

I haven't tried this pattern with other yarns, but I assume it will work okay with other bulky yarns: Noro Iro, Lamb's Pride Bulky, Knit Picks Cadena, your own bulky handspun. Give it a shot, and send me pics. I'll post them here.

Click on the 2 pages to enlarge, right click to save as jpgs, print from any graphics program. As with all of my original patterns posted here, you may make as many as you like, you may donate them to charity, you may even sell them (if you're a single knitter, not a company or a factory). Please do not repost the pages elsewhere, or print them to hand out to people. Do, please, direct people here to download and print them themselves. Thank you.

Freebie Wednesday- Simple Stripes Fair Isle Sock Pattern

Surprise!
It'll still be awhile before I can get back to regular Freebie Friday patterns, so here's an interim freebie.
I designed this sock for Knit Picks a few years ago. When KP discontinued the yarn, they also discontinued the pattern. The rights have reverted back to me. It has proven to be a popular pattern- I get requests for it all the time. Instead of just sending the file out to people, I decided to post it.
You can use any self patterning or self striping yarn with this pattern- just make sure that the colors contrast sharply with the solid base yarn. If you come across a color section that doesn't look *right* with the background yarn, just cut it and go to the next color in the repeat. You get great shading and none of those pesky ends to weave in.
I couldn't figure out how to put the pdf file as a download here, so I printed out the pages and scanned them.
Do the usual- click on the images to enlarge, right click to save as jpgs, print from any graphics program.

Freebie Friday- Winter White Tam

I've mentioned Decadent Fibers yarn here before, and this week, I'm featuring their wonderful Marshmallow yarn in the Freebie Friday pattern. Marshmallow is a lovely blend of Alpaca and Merino- it's so soft that I want to nap on it. I used their natural undyed yarn for this pattern, but Chris and Pat will also dye Marshmallow in any of their fantastic colorways.

You can make two Winter White tams with one skein of Marshmallow. Go to the Decadent Fibers website and check out their fantastic yarns:

This tam is fun to make- just simple knit and purl textured motifs, for a soft and gorgeous hat.

Freebie Friday- Standed Snowman Mitten #2

Note: The first chart page I uploaded had an error. Please download the correction with the red *revised* on the page. Sorry for the inconvenience- that's what I get for leaving the work until the last minute.

And here is the companion chart to last week's Stranded Snowman Mittens #1. Download those pages for the knitting instructions and specs.

Freebie Friday- Part 1- Stranded Snow Mittens Child Size

I made this mismatched pair of mittens for my granddaughter in '06 (this is an old pic, but they still look pretty good, if a little worn and well-loved). This week's pattern and chart is for the Snowman mitten. Next week's will be the snowflake mitten. These mittens are the same on the front and back, so you can make a pair of either, or replicate my mis-mated pair. If you want to make them shorter, begin the top decreases a little earlier (it won't mess up the snowman heads too much). If you want to make them longer, do a few rows of the vertical striped top before beginning the decreases. If you want to make them wider, add a few stitches to either side of the chart (the same number on both sides) and do a few more increases on the thumb gusset. If you want to make them Adult size, I suspect using DK yarn and size 3 needles will do the trick.
This chart was adapted from a Seasonal Vest pattern that I did for Knit Picks. That pattern is now out of print, and the rights reverted to me.

Freebie Friday- Fingering Weight Fingerless Mittens

This is the last Freebie Friday pattern for this year (I'll have wonderful company all week and no time to work up one for next week). This pattern is great for last-minute gifts, and for using up those odds and ends of sock yarn. I always have enough left to knit a pair from 100gr of sock yarn after the socks are finished (all sizes except size 13 men).

This pattern is similar to another fingerless mitten pattern I designed (link: http://www.soxie.com/wristers.html ), but this one is bigger all around. Either is good for a quick gift.
